I came across this website earlier today.
It's a blog written by a gal who is working on a book called The Happiness Project.
I really enjoyed her entry, "Why I'm NOT Trying to Keep Things Simple".
She talks about paying attention to the core rules of our life, and how they impact our decisions and actions in our lives.
She and I share one of these "life rules" - I'm in a hurry.
We both use this rule to prevent us from wasting time, and to stay focused on our top priorities. But this rule can undermine my other decisions and actions - such as the desire to "do nothing" on a weekend afternoon. Often, if I try to set aside a few hours for myself, just to veg out by watching a movie, read a book, or some other relaxing pursuit, I end up feeling guilt and frustration afterwards, as if I've wasted precious moments that I could have been (fill in the blank with something more "productive") . . .
Another subtle, and equally disturbing manifestation of this life rule "I'm in a hurry" is when this rule takes over in situations that I have little to no control over - for example, in bumper to bumper traffic. Sitting in park on a crowded road does not mesh well with my life rule.
However, making myself aware of the obvious conflict between this "life rule" and my current traffic situation, and the absolute lack of control I have over the situation can open up space for me to relax. To allow that desire to hurry to subside for the moment, and instead to breathe deep.
*************
Sadly, "I'm in a hurry" prevents me from taking the much needed time to blog on a semi-regular basis. Wise words from a good friend yesterday: "Either close down your blog, or allow yourself to not feel guilty for posting less often than you wish you did."
I'm thinking about what some of my other "life rules" are . . . and how I can be better about working with them, or perhaps working to modify some of them.
What are some of your "life rules"?
